Shakespeare Theatre Association

The Shakespeare Theatre Association (STA) was established to provide a forum for the artistic, managerial, educational leadership for theatres primarily involved with the production of the works of William Shakespeare; to discuss issues and methods of work, resources, and information; and to act as an advocate for Shakespearean productions and training.

The central focus of the organization is its annual conference. Once a year we gather at the home of one of our member theatres to share information directly relating to the production of Shakespeare’s plays. The format for our meeting often runs the spectrum from panel discussions, to direct address by notable figures in the field, workshops, performances, small gatherings, receptions, and a closing dinner.

San Francisco Shakespeare Festival hosted the conference in January 2015. Notes from the sessions can be found at STA2015.wordpress.com. Guest speakers and panel members included Carl Lumbly, Neil Freeman, Ben Crystal, playwrights Bill Cain, Amy Freed, and Lauren Gunderson, Ayanna Thompson, and Susan Nelson.

2016 marks 400 years since Shakespeare's death - 400 years of his enduring legacy. All over the world, Shakespeare lovers are marking this event with special celebrations. As proud members of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, SF Shakes is celebrating with Shakespeare theatres across the globe at weareshakespeare.com.
